President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi has said he would not be surprised if Sunderland and Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan picks up the 2010 Africa Player of the Year award.
He attributes his position to the impressive performance the striker put up during the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Mr. Nyantakyi said Asamoah Gyan stands tall among those contesting the award and that gives him a better chance of winning the award.
He said the fact that three Black Stars players have been nominated by CAF for the award is an endorsement of the remarkable achievement by Black Stars and the country as a whole.
The 24-year-old striker inspired Ghana to the grand finale of the 2010 African Cup of Nations and then a quarter-final place at the World Cup, as he scored three goals apiece in both competitions.
Asamoah Gyan was named in a 10-man shortlist for the award by CAF along with two other Ghanaian players Andre Ayew and Kevin Prince Boateng.
Gyan is expected to face stiff competition from other award contenders, namely Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Cameroon and Inter Milan attacker Samuel Eto’o Fils.
Other players in contention are Seydou Keita of Barcelona and Mali, Egypt’s Mohammed Gedo who played a major part in their Nations Cup triumph in Angola and the Ivorian Solomon Kalou as well as Madjid Boughera of Algeria and Glasgow Rangers.
The winner of each category will be decided by votes from the head coaches of the respective senior national teams or technical directors of the 53 National Associations affiliated to Caf.
The winner will be revealed at an award gala in the Egyptian capital Cairo on December 20.
