Chiefs from the Western Region are furious with members of the Parliamentary Select Committees on Finance, Mines and Energy over the rejection of a ten percent demand of oil revenue for the Western Region’s development.
One of the Chiefs, Awulae Annor Adjaye III of the Western Nzema Traditional Area told Citi News that the chiefs and people of the Region are totally appalled at the way the request was handled.
He said the Chiefs are particularly disappointed in the First Deputy Speaker Honorable Doe Adjaho, who had given them
an assurance that they were going to be consulted after deliberations by the Joint Committees.
“Unfortunately nobody heard anything from them and all that we heard was the rubbishing of the petition by various people especially from the sub-committee and from the floor of Parliament.
He said the Chiefs were shocked at the comments made by Twumasi Appiah, MP for Sene describing their request as ridiculous.
“For failing to comply with their own position that they will get back to the chiefs and discuss any problem that will arise, it means they have shown gross disrespect to the institution of chieftaincy in the Western Region and they must apologize” he said.
Although the supposed rubbishing of the chiefs’ request was particularly by some MPs, Awulae Annor Adjaye is of the view that the Leadership of Parliament must be responsible since they could have cautioned members from making such public statements on a matter that was before the house.
Awulae Annor Adjaye, who spoke in his personal capacity as the Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, told Citi News that Government will incur the wrath of the entire Region if it fails to address their demands properly.
“I want to tell you that if they refuse to deal with the ten percent concerns and they just rubbish it and think that we are only jokers, we will joke with them” he said.
Asked whether the Chiefs and people of the Western Region were not going to vote for the Government in subsequent elections, he responded, “There are many ways of killing a cat like somebody said. There are so many ways of dealing with Politicians who do not respect the indigenous people of the country. We want the apology from Doe Adjaho because he gave us the promise. Whether he will come alone and come along with the people it is his own problem” he said.
According to Awulae Annor Adjaye, even in the United States where democracy has triumphed, indigenous people are respected when it matters most.
“It shouldn’t happen that people voted into power will not respect its people. If they want to rubbish the indigenous people, they will have the results later” he noted.
