A team of medical officers from the Ghana police service will on Wednesday November 24, visit captured suspected murderer and robber Johnson Kombian in police custody to assess his health condition.Kombian’s legal team claim he has been physically abused by the police during his arrest, endangering his health.
Kombian appeared in court on Monday November 21, with gunshot wounds after he was subdued by police in Togo.
The three-time jail breaker, who is alleged to have killed two policemen and wounded another at Nakpanduri in October 2010, has been charged with Escape from Lawful Custody, contrary to Section 226 of Act 29/60.
He has been remanded in custody and will reappear in Circuit Court 1, presided over by Eric Kyei Baffour on December 8, 2010.
His lawyer George Asumaning told Citi News his clients’ human rights have been violated by the police, breaching the constitution which protects the fundamental human rights of citizens.
He said Johnson Kombian must be healthy for the prosecution to proceed.
“Our concern is that Kombian is a human being who has been arrested and for all intent and purposes, he is required to stand trial. Do we want to see him dead? If the answer is no, then we have to make sure the person is in good health and good frame of mind to stand his trial. But the person we saw was being dragged and dumped into a vehicle in a democratic country. The best thing is to offer him medical attention".
The police administration has denied assaulting the suspect explaining that he sustained the injuries in Togo when he resisted arrest.
Police PRO Superintendent Kwesi Ofori is reported to have said that Johnson Kombian has received the best of treatment deserving of a suspect.
But his Lawyer is challenging the police's claim. He said no medical check-up was conducted on his client.
